How to Beat a Banger in Pickleball
Every pickleball player eventually faces a banger โ someone who stands at the baseline and drives every ball as hard as they can, refusing to dink, refusing to move forward, and somehow winning enough points to make your life miserable. The good news: bangers are beatable. The better news: the counter-strategy is learnable in a single session. Here's exactly what to do.
What is a banger and why do they work?
A banger is a player who relies primarily on pace โ driving the ball hard from mid-court or baseline rather than engaging in the soft dinking game at the non-volley zone. The style works for a simple reason: fast balls are harder to reset. At recreational levels where players haven't developed reliable blocks and resets, pace wins.
Bangers aren't 'cheating' or playing badly โ pace is a legitimate weapon. The problem is that the banger's strategy forces the soft-game player out of their comfort zone. If you're a dinker who's used to controlling the NVZ line, a banger takes away your preferred game state entirely.
Understanding this dynamic is the first step: you're not trying to out-dink a banger. You're trying to prevent them from dictating the game.
Move back โ but not too far
The instinct when someone is driving hard at you is to back up. This is correct โ but only by 2 to 4 feet. Many players back up to the baseline and stay there, which is exactly what the banger wants: they're comfortable in a baseline-to-baseline exchange.
The correct position is the transition zone: roughly between the baseline and the kitchen line. From here you have time to react to the drive, you can still attack a short ball, and you haven't surrendered the ability to come forward.
If you get caught at the NVZ line with a banger firing hard drives at you, step back to give yourself half a second of reaction time. Once the rally slows, re-advance.
Block and reset โ don't counter-drive
The most common mistake against bangers: trying to match pace. You counter-drive, they drive harder, the rally turns into a speed contest at close range that neither of you can sustainably control.
Instead, take pace off. Block the drive with a soft, flat face โ paddle in front of you, minimal swing, let the ball's speed do the work of clearing the net. The goal of the block is a low, unattackable ball that lands in the kitchen or just past it.
A well-placed soft reset from a hard drive is much harder to execute than it looks โ it requires you to hold your grip loosely and absorb the pace rather than fighting it. Practice this in isolation before expecting it in games.
Target their feet and body
Bangers are often baseline players who aren't moving well laterally. Drive low to their feet โ specifically the area between their hip and the court surface. This is the hardest ball to handle for anyone: too low to drive comfortably, too close to the body to swing freely.
Aim crosscourt at the backhand hip of the weakest baseline player. Most recreational bangers have reliable forehands and unreliable backhands. If you can force backhands at the hip, your reset will be an easy mid-court pop-up you can put away.
Attack the transition โ the moment they come forward
Bangers who stay at the baseline forever are easier to manage than bangers who eventually advance. When a banger does start moving forward, attack their feet while they're in transition โ the no-man's land between baseline and kitchen is where they're most vulnerable.
A hard, low drive at a player mid-transition is one of the hardest balls to handle in pickleball. They can't let it bounce (too far from the kitchen), can't easily volley it up (it's at knee height), and can't retreat quickly enough to reset.
When to banger back
Sometimes the right counter-strategy is to match pace for a rally or two โ not to out-drive the banger, but to signal that you're not afraid of the exchange and to test their block/reset.
Most recreational bangers are excellent at driving but poor at blocking hard drives back at them. If you take a big swing at their body early in the game and they pop it up or net it, you've sent a message and changed their shot selection.
Use pace strategically, not reactively. Hitting hard because you're frustrated is not a strategy. Hitting hard on a specific short ball to expose a weakness is.
The mental game
Bangers win at the recreational level partly on psychology. Pace creates urgency, urgency creates errors, errors create momentum. If you tighten up and start making unforced errors because of the pace, the banger doesn't even need great shot-making to beat you.
The counter: slow down mentally. Give yourself a breath between points. Consciously relax your grip. The banger needs your panic โ don't give it to them.
The most frustrating thing you can do to a banger is calmly block every drive into the kitchen and smile. It takes away their reward.
Frequently asked questions
Is banging a legitimate strategy in pickleball?+
Absolutely. Pace is a legal and effective weapon, particularly at the 3.0โ3.5 level where opponents haven't developed reliable resets. At 4.0+ levels, pure banging becomes less effective because opponents can block and reset with consistency, and the banger's own reset game becomes exposed.
Why don't bangers just come to the net?+
Bangers often don't come forward because they've built their game on baseline power and feel uncomfortable in the soft-game environment at the NVZ. Some also stay back intentionally because they know their transition game (the walk from baseline to kitchen) is a vulnerability.
Does dinking actually beat bangers?+
Not directly โ you can't out-dink someone who won't engage in a dink rally. The strategy is to reset their drives into the kitchen (creating the conditions for a dink rally), then win the soft game once they're forced forward.
What grip should I use when blocking a hard drive?+
A relaxed continental or eastern grip with a soft hand โ think 3 or 4 out of 10 grip pressure. A tight grip will trampoline the ball back at pace. A soft grip absorbs pace and drops the ball low.
Once you can neutralize bangers, the third shot drop is the next skill to master.
